What's an Address Verification API?
An address verification application programming interface (API) is a RESTful web service that confirms that an inputted address is valid, free of errors, and that it actually exists. It does so by checking it against an official database of addresses and then correcting and standardizing it, or providing latitude and longitude coordinates (geocoding) for landmarks associated with the address.
Businesses can use address validation APIs to ensure that the addresses they collect from their customers are correct, standard, and complete. This improves their ability to deliver items, provide a better customer experience, and reduces costs from missed deliveries and chargebacks.
The API can correct misspelled or abbreviated address components, check for missing data, and add locality-specific formatting based on the country or region where the address is located. It can also enrich an address with additional information like congressional districts, FIPS codes, vacancy status, and more.
Without an API for address validation, you would have to use a geocoding API or place autocomplete to get the same functionality. However, those other APIs do not verify or standardize addresses and only return suggestions that are already in the Google Maps database. In turn, this creates friction for your users at checkout or account creation and increases the likelihood that they will abandon the form altogether. With the Address Validation API from Experian, you can validate and standardize address inputs with Google Maps Platform Places data and improve the user experience while minimizing costly errors and delivery failures.
